OUR PHILOSOPHY

Psychotherapy has often been compared to a journey. Here at psychAmerica we find the notion of a detour to offer a more honest metaphor.

Psychotherapy Philosophy

PSYCHOTHERAPY AS DETOUR

A detour can represent a roundabout route taken in order to avoid an obstacle, much like the everyday coping mechanisms we use to avoid issues we have yet to address and perhaps believe we cannot resolve.

Yet a detour also represents a route by which something is visited on the way to our destination, sometimes profoundly changing our destiny as a result.

The detours offered at psychAmerica encompass both meanings, involving revisiting that which has been avoided in the past, something often since forgotten, something that becomes an obstacle in the present.

Revisiting this forgotten past loosens the need for such detouring, so that our destiny becomes less inevitable, leaving us freer to stray from the straight and narrow; “to leave my behind in the past” (The B52s).

This invitation to wander that psychAmerica extends to you is to become a “soul in wonder” (Van Morrison).

Your brain is an ever-changing kaleidoscope of moods and colors
We walk to the park, but it’s melting in the dark
All of a sudden your mood changes and your face looks like a cake
Left out in the rain

….

Detour through your mind, supersaver to your mind
We seem to float by yesterday’s child
The new you, the land time forgot and a horse with no name
And all of a sudden we realize that we are no more

….

We open the door
As we go further into the gloom we chance upon a large orange room
From ear to ear, from the here and now
Who am I? Where am I going? How much will it cost?
I hear another galaxy spinning around
A flash of blinding light and we’re in an elegantly appointed doctor’s office

….

We open the door
As we go further into the gloom we chance upon a large orange room
From ear to ear, from the here and now
Who am I? Where have I been? Where am I going? Do I need any luggage?
I need to leave my behind in the past.

I need to leave my past behind.
